Rowan Class

Welcome to Rowan class!

We work closely with pupils to encourage and develop their individual strengths. The children learn in a supportive environment: this enables them to work collaboratively, undertake research and build up project-based work.  We give more emphasis to the variety and complexity of homework that is set.

They will bee very quiet over the winter, but start to get buzzy collecting pollen in the spring. This week, to celebrate the arrival of our own honey bees we would like to create a whole school display about bees. The display will be located in the school reception area so that it is visible for all visitors to enjoy.   Please choose one of the following projects to complete at home and...

Skype-ing The Americas

Beech and Cedar Class’s topics this term is ‘The Americas.’ So we thought the best way to develop a better understanding of this huge topic was to talk to people who live in North and South America. We started this with a Skype call to Peru yesterday and spoke to our favourite ex-teacher, Mrs Rowlinson. We learnt lots about schools, food and their son. Here are a few photos: The markets on the streets of Lima Mrs and Mr Rowlinson at Machu Pichu Mr and Mrs Rowlinson and their beautiful son,...

Sleepover night

Sleeping in school?  Surely not! But that’s what Year 3 and Year 4, with some invited Year 5 pupils, enjoyed on Friday evening.  They arrived after tea with sleeping bags and teddies and, after some fun and games, a relaxing film and more stories, they were tucked up in bed and sound asleep in no time – even Miss Mason … Concentrating very hard … Love the hair! Time to relax 🙂 And now for a...

Making maths fun …

Making maths fun … ‘This is the best maths lesson EVER!’ ‘Can we do maths all day?’  – just two of the comments from the children during our fabulous maths enrichment morning last week, organised by our maths lead Tim Hoskins.  Parents joined us for the first hour, playing various maths games with their children including Monopoly (using and calculating with money) and Battleships (positional language).  Chess and draughts were also popular, helping to develop critical thinking skills – by the end of...

Making Flour

Making Flour This week in Beech Class we used a mini stone-grinding mill to make our own flour. We then used the flour to make bread. We have been doing instruction writing in our literacy lessons and this was a fun way to finish off the unit of work and the term. We all had a brilliant time and I’m sure the bread will be delicious.    ...

Pipping and hatching

Pipping and hatching

Over the past two days, we have seen some incredible changes in our incubator. The eggs have slowly been pipped and chickens have started to hatch. We now have eight beautiful baby chicks, who are all happy and healthy. Six boys and two girls. You can tell who the boys are because their feathers are more yellow than the girls. The females are more of a browny orange colour. We are still keeping a careful eye on two of our unhatched eggs so… watch this space! Building up his strength Chirping around Huddling together...

Living Eggs!

Posted by on Wednesday, 8th July, 2015 in Acorn Class, Beech Class, Cedar Class, Maple Class, Rowan Class | 0 comments

IMG_4505 On Monday 6th July, ten chicken eggs were delivered to school and we were all very excited. To begin with, the eggs were perfectly still and nothing seemed to be happening. We had to keep the eggs in an incubator to keep them warm, just like it would be in their natural habitat – under mother hen’s bottom. Excitedly, we all watched the incubator and, throughout the day, things started to happen. We saw cracks emerge and, when we listened carefully, we heard cheeping and chirping from inside the shells. It was incredible....

A Roman Banquet

Posted by on Friday, 22nd May, 2015 in Beech Class, News | 0 comments

A Roman Banquet Well done to Beech class for working hard to collect their reward shells, earning them a well-deserved end of term treat this week when Miss Mason and Mrs Urwin provided them with a Roman Banquet to round off their topic this term.  The children donned their togas and laurel crowns and enjoyed a feast of yoghurt and honey, dormice (apparently traditional Roman food, but looking suspiciously like marshmallows to me!), dates, olives, brains (!) and other traditional Roman fare.  Entertainment was laid on courtesy of some of the...

Dance, dance, dance …

Dance, dance, dance … Yet again our fabulous children in Beech class demonstrated that they are more than capable of an outstanding performance when they showed off their dance skills at the Henley Youth Festival dance event at the Kenton Theatre last month. The children worked with Victoria Porter, local dance teacher and choreographer, for just one day to learn the steps and moves and put together an fantastic, polished dance routine which opened the evening performance at the theatre.  They worked incredibly hard to learn the routine...

Sleepover in school? Surely not …

Sleepover in school?  Surely not … Oh yes we did!  Last Friday saw Beech Class bringing their pyjamas and teddies into school for a sleepover with their friends – and most of the staff, in some way or another! – which was an absolute blast!  We toasted marshmallows, played hide-and-seek in the fading light, watched a bit of Harry Potter with our hot chocolate to chill down a bit and enjoyed a story before bedtime.  The children were fantastic – despite several comments on Monday of ‘I only got an hour!’ or...
